We paid our dues in January
When the air was cold as the bed we shared
And the land as dead as the dreams we dared
to carry
We bid farewell in March
When the sun made feeble attempts
to breathe life back into us
And
the open road lured me North with
lustful promise;
Tense times were tedious
He told me he loved me in June
When the mountain flowers had started to bloom
and I was learning to live in tune with
other natures
So I let him slip idly through
leather-worn fingers…
Not a whisper of him lingered
But it was August when I thought that I
missed him
When the air kissed my skin with the chill of
another fall
Somewhere 10,000 feet above it all
I recalled the beauty
and forgot the pain
My body drenched in the late summer rains
And I knew
That time has its way with memory,
eventually too.
Heading into another September
I hope that I remember
The change I spent
and the wealth I gained;
The love came and went
But I remained.
